Background

The university traces its institutional roots to the Bihar Agricultural College, Sabour, which was among the early agricultural colleges established in the region during the colonial period. For many decades, the Sabour campus functioned as a constituent college, first under the University of Bhagalpur and later as part of the Rajendra Agricultural University, Pusa, which served as the principal agricultural university for undivided Bihar.

Bihar Agricultural University was constituted as a separate state university by an act of the Bihar legislature, with its headquarters at the historic Sabour campus. Its creation was part of a wider reorganisation of agricultural higher education in Bihar aimed at strengthening teaching, research, and extension services on a regional basis.

Campus and location

The main campus at Sabour lies on the southern bank of the Ganges, a few kilometres east of Bhagalpur city. The location places the university within the agro-climatic zone of the middle Gangetic plain, which is characterised by alluvial soils and a sub-humid climate suitable for a wide range of crops including rice, wheat, maize, pulses, oilseeds, and horticultural produce. The campus houses academic blocks, research farms, hostels, and faculty residences.

Academic structure

The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes through its constituent colleges and faculties. The principal areas of instruction and research include:

  • Agriculture (agronomy, soil science, plant breeding and genetics, plant pathology, entomology)
  • Horticulture
  • Agricultural engineering
  • Fisheries science
  • Forestry
  • Agribusiness management and agricultural economics
  • Basic sciences and humanities supporting agricultural curricula

In addition to the Sabour headquarters, the university administers constituent colleges located in different districts of Bihar, which extend agricultural and horticultural education across the state.

Research and extension

BAU operates research stations and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) in several districts of Bihar, working under the umbrella of the All India Coordinated Research Projects of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. Research priorities reflect the agro-ecological needs of Bihar and include crop improvement, integrated pest and nutrient management, water management for flood- and drought-prone tracts, post-harvest technology, and livelihood-oriented horticulture and fisheries.

The extension wing transfers technologies to farmers through training programmes, demonstration plots, farm advisory services, publications, and field days organised in collaboration with the state Department of Agriculture.

Significance

As one of Bihar's dedicated agricultural universities, BAU plays a central role in human resource development for the state's farm sector, in evolving region-specific crop varieties and practices, and in supporting public extension services. Its location in the eastern Gangetic plain places it within an area of high agricultural importance, where smallholder farming, rice–wheat systems, and seasonal flooding shape both research priorities and policy relevance.
