Format
The format follows the standard Big Brother template adapted for Indian audiences. A group of celebrity contestants, typically drawn from the Tamil film and television industry, enter a custom-designed house and live without contact with the outside world for the duration of the season, which generally runs for around 100 days. Contestants are given weekly tasks by the unseen authority figure known as "Bigg Boss," whose voice issues instructions over the house's audio system.
Each week, housemates nominate fellow contestants for eviction. Audience voting through telephone, SMS, and the Hotstar application determines who is saved, with the contestant receiving the fewest votes typically being eliminated. The last housemate remaining is declared the winner and receives a cash prize.
Background
The Indian Bigg Boss franchise began with the Hindi version in 2006 on Sony Entertainment Television, later moving to Colors. The Tamil edition was launched in 2017 as part of Star Network's expansion of regional reality programming on Star Vijay. The decision to cast veteran actor and filmmaker Kamal Haasan as host was a notable factor in the show's initial popularity, given his cross-generational appeal in Tamil cinema.
Hosts
Kamal Haasan has hosted the show from its first season, appearing primarily on weekend episodes to interact with housemates, review the week's events, and announce evictions. His hosting role has been widely associated with the public identity of the Tamil version.

Reception and significance
Since its launch, Bigg Boss Tamil has been one of the highest-rated non-fiction programmes on Tamil television and a major contributor to Star Vijay's prime-time ratings. The show has also been a launching pad for several contestants, with many gaining work in films, web series, and television serials after their participation. Its weekend episodes featuring Kamal Haasan have consistently drawn high television rating points (TRPs).
The series has, on several occasions, drawn criticism and controversy, including objections from cultural and political groups regarding content, depictions of conflict, and contestant behaviour. Petitions and complaints have at times been filed before regulatory bodies and courts, though the show has continued to air through successive seasons.
Production
The show is produced by Endemol Shine India, the Indian arm of the international format owner. The Bigg Boss house used for the Tamil edition has typically been constructed on a soundstage in Chennai, with the set redesigned for each season. The production employs a large crew handling round-the-clock recording, with multiple fixed and operator-controlled cameras placed throughout the house.
