Overview
Bhusaval Junction lies on the Mumbai–Bhusawal–Itarsi–Howrah corridor, one of the busiest mainline routes of Indian Railways. The station functions as a junction where the line from Mumbai branches towards Itarsi/Khandwa in central India and towards Surat in Gujarat through the Bhusawal–Surat section. Its strategic location in the Tapi valley has historically made Bhusawal a critical operational and crew-changing point.
History
The railway reached Bhusawal in the second half of the nineteenth century when the Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR) extended its network eastward from Bombay (Mumbai). With the opening of the line through Khandwa towards Jabalpur, Bhusawal acquired the status of a junction for traffic moving between western India and the Gangetic plains. After the reorganisation of Indian Railways in 1951, Bhusawal became a divisional headquarters under Central Railway, formed by the merger of the GIPR with other systems.
Operations and infrastructure
The station has multiple platforms equipped to handle long-distance mail/express trains, superfast trains, passenger services and freight movement. Bhusawal is also home to one of the older locomotive sheds on Central Railway, supporting both electric and, historically, diesel and steam traction. The yard at Bhusawal is among the larger marshalling facilities in the region and plays a significant role in goods traffic, particularly coal movement to power stations in the area.
Bhusawal division
As the headquarters of the Bhusawal division, the station oversees a network covering parts of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, including sections towards Igatpuri, Manmad, Khandwa and Surat. The division administers track maintenance, locomotive operations, station management and commercial activities across this territory.
Connectivity
Bhusaval Junction is served by a wide range of long-distance trains connecting Mumbai with Kolkata, Howrah, Varanasi, Patna, Allahabad (Prayagraj), Lucknow, Bhopal, Nagpur, Pune, and several cities in southern and eastern India. Trains running between western India and Gujarat also use the Bhusawal–Surat route via Amalner and Nandurbar.
Significance
Beyond its function as a transit point, Bhusawal town itself grew around the railway establishment, with railway colonies, workshops and ancillary services forming a significant part of the local economy. The presence of the divisional headquarters, locomotive shed and large yard makes the station a key employment centre for railway personnel.
