Early life and background

Bhupinder Singh was born in Amritsar into a family with a strong musical orientation. His father, Professor Nathu Singh, was a music teacher who introduced him to classical training at an early age, although Bhupinder has spoken in interviews about an initial reluctance towards music. He later joined All India Radio in Delhi, working as a vocalist and guitarist, and also performed for Doordarshan in its early years.

Entry into film music

The composer Madan Mohan heard him at an All India Radio function and brought him to Mumbai. His first major film recording came in Haqeeqat (1964), directed by Chetan Anand and composed by Madan Mohan, where he sang a portion of the celebrated patriotic song "Hoke Majboor Mujhe Usne Bhulaya Hoga" along with Mohammed Rafi, Talat Mahmood and Manna Dey.

Career as a singer and guitarist

Apart from singing, Bhupinder was one of Hindi cinema's most sought-after session guitarists during the 1960s and 1970s. He played the guitar on several landmark recordings, including R. D. Burman's "Dum Maro Dum" (Hare Rama Hare Krishna, 1971) and "Chura Liya Hai Tumne" (Yaadon Ki Baaraat, 1973), as well as Madan Mohan's "Hai Tere Saath Meri Wafa" (Hindustan Ki Kasam).

As a playback singer he is most closely identified with the work of music director R. D. Burman and the lyricist Gulzar. Notable songs include:

  • "Dil Dhoondta Hai" (duet with Lata Mangeshkar) – Mausam (1975)
  • "Naam Gum Jayega" (with Lata Mangeshkar) – Kinara (1977)
  • "Beeti Na Bitai Raina" (with Lata Mangeshkar) – Parichay (1972)
  • "Do Diwane Shahar Mein" (with Runa Laila/Chithra Singh versions) – Gharaonda (1977)
  • "Karoge Yaad To" – Bazaar (1982)
  • "Thodi Si Zameen, Thoda Aasmaan" – Sitara (1980)
  • "Kisi Nazar Ko Tera Intezaar Aaj Bhi Hai" (with Asha Bhosle) – Aitbaar (1985)
  • "Zindagi Mere Ghar Aana" (with Suresh Wadkar) – Dooriyaan (1979)

Ghazal career and Bhupinder–Mitali

From the late 1970s, Bhupinder increasingly focused on the ghazal. He married the singer Mitali Mukherjee in 1983, and the duo, billed as Bhupinder–Mitali, became a popular concert and recording pair. They released numerous ghazal albums and toured widely in India, the Gulf, the United Kingdom and North America. Their style emphasised clear diction, classical-leaning melody, and minimal ornamentation, and they often performed the works of Urdu poets such as Mirza Ghalib, Mir Taqi Mir, Bashir Badr and Gulzar.

Style and significance

Bhupinder Singh's voice, characterised by a low timbre and an introspective delivery, made him a preferred choice for songs of solitude, memory and quiet melancholy. Music historians often note his importance as a bridge figure: a trained classical-influenced vocalist who was equally at home with Western guitar techniques, and a film singer who chose to limit his cinema output in favour of the ghazal. His association with Gulzar's lyrics and R. D. Burman's compositions produced some of the most enduring songs of 1970s Hindi cinema.

Later years and death

In his later career he continued to perform live, record ghazal albums and contribute occasionally to films and television. He died on 18 July 2022 in Mumbai, at the age of 82, following age-related health issues. His death was widely mourned in the Hindi film and ghazal communities.
