She has a younger sister, Samiksha Pednekar. She studied at Arya Vidya Mandir in Mumbai and later at Whistling Woods International, the film institute founded by Subhash Ghai.

Career

Debut and early work (2015–2017)

Pednekar made her on-screen debut in Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015), directed by Sharat Katariya and produced by Yash Raj Films. She played Sandhya, an overweight, educated young woman in a small-town arranged marriage in Haridwar. To portray the role authentically, she gained substantial weight before filming. The performance earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut and several other industry recognitions.

Rise as a leading actress (2017–2019)

In 2017, she appeared in Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, opposite Akshay Kumar, a film inspired by the Swachh Bharat Mission and centred on rural sanitation. The same year she starred in Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, a comedy on erectile dysfunction, again opposite Ayushmann Khurrana.

In 2018, she played a sharpshooter in Lust Stories (Netflix anthology) and appeared in Manmarziyaan, directed by Anurag Kashyap. In 2019, she had releases including Sonchiriya, directed by Abhishek Chaubey and set in the Chambal ravines; Bala, where she played a dark-skinned lawyer; Saand Ki Aankh, in which she portrayed the veteran sharpshooter Chandro Tomar; and Pati Patni Aur Woh.

Subsequent work (2020 onwards)

Her later releases include Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare (2020), directed by Alankrita Shrivastava for Netflix; Durgamati (2020); Badhaai Do (2022), in which she played a lesbian woman in a lavender marriage opposite Rajkummar Rao; Raksha Bandhan (2022); Govinda Naam Mera (2022); Bheed (2023), directed by Anubhav Sinha; Thank You for Coming (2023); and Bhakshak (2024) for Netflix.

Public engagement

Pednekar has been associated with environmental and social campaigns. She launched the "Climate Warrior" initiative to raise awareness on climate change and has been appointed an Advocate for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in India on Sustainable Development Goals.

Significance

Pednekar is often cited as part of a wave of Hindi-cinema performers in the late 2010s whose careers were built around socially themed mainstream films rather than conventional glamour-driven roles. Her debut performance, in particular, is regarded as a notable example of a leading actress entering Hindi cinema in a non-conventional physical appearance, and her subsequent filmography has frequently engaged with themes such as caste, gender, sexuality, sanitation, and rural India.
