Background

Bhuj lies in the Kachchh peninsula of western Gujarat, a region historically connected to the rest of India by metre gauge railway lines. The line linking Kachchh with the Indian railway network was originally built as part of the metre gauge system that served Saurashtra and Kachchh, with Bhuj serving as a key inland terminus.

Gauge conversion

As part of Indian Railways' Project Unigauge programme, the metre gauge line connecting Kachchh to the broader network was converted to broad gauge. The conversion of the section to Bhuj allowed direct broad gauge passenger services between Bhuj and other major Indian cities, ending the need for transhipment of passengers and goods at junction points. After the conversion, Bhuj became reachable by long-distance broad gauge express trains.

Services

The station handles long-distance express trains as well as regional passenger services. Notable categories of services that originate from or terminate at Bhuj include express trains connecting the station to destinations such as Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Gandhidham, Dadar, Pune and Bareilly, among others. The station also serves as an important transit point for passengers travelling onward by road to towns and pilgrimage sites in Kachchh, including Mandvi, Mata no Madh and the border areas near Lakhpat.

Significance

As the principal railway station of Bhuj town, the station plays an important role in the mobility of residents, defence personnel posted in the Kachchh sector, and tourists visiting destinations such as the Rann of Kachchh, the annual Rann Utsav, the Aina Mahal, the Prag Mahal and the Kala Dungar viewpoint. Goods traffic in the wider Kachchh railway network is dominated by the major ports at Kandla and Mundra, while Bhuj itself is primarily a passenger-oriented station.

Connectivity

Bhuj is connected by road to Gandhidham, Mundra, Mandvi, Anjar and Nakhatrana via state highways. Bhuj Airport, a domestic airport with a civil enclave at the Indian Air Force station, lies a short distance from the railway station and provides limited air connectivity to Mumbai.
