The Hindi adaptation by Priyadarshan, released in 2007, retained the central premise of a young couple moving into an old palace where the spirit of a Bengali dancer, Manjulika, is believed to reside, while introducing comic elements suited to the Hindi mainstream audience.

Films

Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007)

Directed by Priyadarshan, the film starred Akshay Kumar as the psychiatrist Dr. Aditya Shrivastav, with Vidya Balan, Shiney Ahuja, Ameesha Patel and Paresh Rawal in supporting roles. The music was composed by Pritam, with the title track becoming widely popular. The film was a commercial success and is regarded as a benchmark Hindi horror comedy of the 2000s.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (2022)

Directed by Anees Bazmee and produced by Bhushan Kumar, Murad Khetani and others, the second instalment starred Kartik Aaryan, Kiara Advani and Tabu. Released on 20 May 2022, the film functioned as a standalone story within the same universe rather than a direct sequel, with Tabu playing dual roles. It became one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of 2022 and revived the franchise commercially after a fifteen-year gap.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 (2024)

Directed by Anees Bazmee, the third film starred Kartik Aaryan, Vidya Balan, Triptii Dimri and Madhuri Dixit. Released on 1 November 2024, on the occasion of Diwali, it brought back Vidya Balan to the franchise nearly two decades after the first film and expanded the Manjulika mythology. The film performed strongly at the box office during the festive season.

Recurring themes and motifs

  • The haveli or palace as a confined, atmospheric setting.
  • The legend of Manjulika, a Bengali court dancer whose spirit is said to possess inhabitants.
  • Psychiatric or rational explanations placed alongside supernatural ones.
  • Use of classical dance, Bengali cultural motifs and the song "Ami Je Tomar".
  • Comic ensemble characters set against horror sequences.

Music

The signature track "Ami Je Tomar", originally composed by M. G. Radhakrishnan for Manichitrathazhu, has been adapted across the Hindi films and is associated with the Manjulika character. Pritam scored the 2007 film, while the later instalments featured multiple composers under the T-Series banner, including Tanishk Bagchi.

Significance

The franchise is considered one of the most successful horror comedy properties in Hindi cinema. It contributed to the mainstreaming of horror comedy as a commercially viable genre in Bollywood, alongside titles such as the Stree series. Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 in particular was credited with reviving theatrical footfalls for Hindi films in the post-pandemic period and establishing Kartik Aaryan as a leading commercial actor.
