Overview
Bhool Bhulaiyaa is an Indian Hindi-language horror-comedy film franchise produced by T-Series Films and Cine1 Studios. The series began in 2007 with a film directed by Priyadarshan, which was a Hindi remake of the Malayalam film Manichitrathazhu (1993). Subsequent installments, directed by Anees Bazmee, are standalone stories that retain the franchise's signature blend of supernatural suspense, comedy, and the recurring motif of dissociative identity disorder linked to the vengeful spirit "Manjulika."

Background
The franchise traces its origin to Manichitrathazhu, a 1993 Malayalam psychological thriller directed by Fazil and starring Mohanlal and Shobana. That film, set in a Kerala tharavadu, dealt with a woman who develops a split personality after being drawn into the legend of a Tamil dancer's ghost. It was remade in several Indian languages, including Kannada (Apthamitra, 2004) and Tamil (Chandramukhi, 2005), before Priyadarshan—who had been associated with the original concept—directed the Hindi adaptation.
Films in the series
Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007)
Released on 12 October 2007, the film starred Akshay Kumar as psychiatrist Dr. Aditya Shrivastav, with Vidya Balan as Avni, Shiney Ahuja as Siddharth, and Ameesha Patel. Set in a royal Rajasthani haveli, the story revisits the Manichitrathazhu plot, adapted to a North Indian milieu. The music was composed by Pritam, with the title track "Hare Ram Hare Ram" and the Manjulika theme becoming widely recognised. The film was a commercial success and is regarded as a landmark in the Hindi horror-comedy genre.
Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (2022)
Released on 20 May 2022 and directed by Anees Bazmee, the sequel was a standalone story sharing the franchise's tropes rather than a direct continuation. It starred Kartik Aaryan as Ruhan Randhawa, with Kiara Advani, Tabu (in a double role as Anjulika and Manjulika), and Rajpal Yadav. Produced by T-Series Films and Cine1 Studios, it emerged as one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of 2022, particularly notable for its post-pandemic theatrical performance. Tabu's performance and the climactic twist were widely praised. The music was again composed by Pritam, and the title track was reworked.
Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 (2024)
Released on 1 November 2024 to coincide with Diwali, the third instalment was directed by Anees Bazmee and produced by Bhushan Kumar and Murad Khetani. The cast featured Kartik Aaryan reprising the role of Rooh Baba, alongside Vidya Balan—marking her return to the franchise after the original film—Triptii Dimri, Madhuri Dixit, and Rajpal Yadav. The film expanded the franchise's mythology by linking the events to the original 2007 storyline and was a major box-office release of the Diwali 2024 season.
Recurring themes and motifs

- Comic ensemble: Rajpal Yadav appears across multiple instalments, providing tonal continuity.
Significance
The Bhool Bhulaiyaa series is among the most commercially durable horror-comedy franchises in Hindi cinema. The 2007 film helped popularise the South Indian psychological-horror template for North Indian audiences, while the 2022 sequel was credited with reviving theatrical footfalls in Hindi cinema after the COVID-19 pandemic. The franchise has also contributed to the mainstream career trajectories of Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Kartik Aaryan, and Tabu in genre cinema.
