Bhisham Sahni (1915–2003) was an Indian writer, playwright and actor who wrote primarily in Hindi. He is best known for his novel Tamas, a work set against the backdrop of the Partition of India, and for his contributions to modern Hindi literature and theatre. Sahni was associated with the progressive literary movement and remained an influential figure in Indian cultural life through the latter half of the twentieth century.

Background

His elder brother, the actor Balraj Sahni, was a prominent figure in Hindi cinema, and Bhisham Sahni himself also worked occasionally as an actor in addition to his literary career.
