Background

Bhawna Jat hails from Rajasthan and developed as an athlete through the domestic federation circuit in India. Like many Indian racewalkers of her generation, she trained at national camps coordinated by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), where racewalking has been one of the disciplines in which Indian athletes have been competitive at Asian and international levels.

Career

Jat's breakthrough came at the National Open Race Walking Championship held at Ranchi in February 2020, where she clocked a personal best in the women's 20 km walk. The timing was inside the qualifying mark set for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, and she was subsequently confirmed as part of the Indian athletics contingent for the Games.

At the Tokyo Olympics, which were postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she competed in the women's 20 km walk event in Sapporo, where the marathon and racewalking events were relocated for cooler conditions. She did not finish the race.

Significance

Bhawna Jat's qualification was viewed as an encouraging development for women's racewalking in India, a discipline that has historically had few representatives at the Olympic level. Her rise from the domestic circuit to Olympic qualification within a single competitive season also drew attention to the depth of talent emerging from smaller centres in Rajasthan.
