Background

Bhavnagar has a long railway history dating to the era of the princely state of Bhavnagar, which developed one of the earliest state-owned railway systems in western India during the late nineteenth century. The narrow-gauge lines built under the Bhavnagar State Railway later formed part of the Bhavnagar–Gondal–Junagadh–Porbandar (BGJP) network and, after independence, were absorbed into the Indian Railways system. Over the following decades, the Saurashtra rail network was progressively converted from metre gauge and narrow gauge to broad gauge under the Project Unigauge initiative.

Operations

As a terminus, the station originates and terminates a number of long-distance and intercity services connecting Bhavnagar with major destinations in Gujarat and other parts of India, including Ahmedabad, Surat, Mumbai, and Delhi. It also handles passenger services to other towns in the Saurashtra region. The station serves as the headquarters of the Bhavnagar railway division, which oversees a network of lines across Saurashtra.

Significance

Bhavnagar Terminus is an important transport node for the industrial, port-based, and commercial activities of Bhavnagar, including links to the Alang ship-recycling area, the Bhavnagar port, and the diamond and engineering industries of the city. It complements other transport infrastructure in the region such as Bhavnagar Airport.
