Background
The university was established by the Government of Assam to expand access to higher education in the western part of the state. It was created by upgrading and integrating an existing degree college in the Bajali area, building on a tradition of higher education that had developed in Barpeta district over several decades. As a state public university, it is funded and regulated by the Government of Assam and operates under the framework laid down for state universities in India.
The institution is named in honour of Bhattadeva (1558–1638), a Vaishnava scholar associated with the Ekasarana Dharma tradition founded by Srimanta Sankardeva. Bhattadeva translated portions of the Bhagavata Purana into Assamese prose and is considered a pioneer figure in the development of Assamese literature.
Academic profile
Bhattadev University offers programmes at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels across the arts, sciences, commerce and professional disciplines. The university follows the academic standards prescribed by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and adopts the choice based credit system (CBCS) in line with practice across Indian higher education.
Campus and location
The university campus is situated in Bajali, in the Barpeta district of Assam. Barpeta itself is historically significant as a centre of the Vaishnava movement in Assam, with Barpeta Satra, founded by Madhavdeva, located in the district. The region lies in the Brahmaputra valley and is connected by road and rail to Guwahati, the largest city of Assam.
Significance
The establishment of Bhattadev University increased the number of state universities serving lower Assam and reduced the dependence of students in Barpeta and adjoining districts on universities in Guwahati and other distant centres. By naming the university after Bhattadeva, the state has also sought to commemorate the Assamese literary and devotional heritage associated with the Ekasarana tradition.
