Overview
Bhatkhande Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya (BSV) is a state university located in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, dedicated to education and research in Indian classical music and the performing arts. The institution was co-founded in 1926 by the eminent musicologist Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande, and has since evolved through several phases of academic recognition.
The institution was originally established as Marris College of Music in 1926. It was later renamed Bhatkhande College of Hindustani Music in 1966, in honour of its founder. In 2000, it was conferred the status of a deemed university by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and came to be known as Bhatkhande Music Institute Deemed University. In 2022, through The Bhatkhande Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya Act, 2022, it was upgraded to a state university and adopted its present name.
BSV provides specialised education across a range of disciplines within the field of music and the performing arts. Its academic offerings cover Vocal Music, Instrumental Music, Rhythms (percussion), Dance, Musicology and Research, and Applied Music. The university thus serves as a centre for both performance-oriented training and scholarly study of Indian classical traditions, with a particular emphasis on the Hindustani musical heritage associated with its founder.
Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande, after whom the institution is named, is regarded as one of the foremost systematisers of Hindustani classical music in the modern era. The university continues to draw upon his pedagogical legacy in shaping its curriculum and academic activities.
