Bharatpur Junction is a railway junction station located in the city of Bharatpur in the eastern part of the state of Rajasthan, India. It serves as an important stop on the Delhi–Mumbai trunk route and provides rail connectivity to several towns in eastern Rajasthan, western Uttar Pradesh, and northern Madhya Pradesh.

Overview

Bharatpur Junction lies on the broad-gauge route connecting Delhi with Mumbai via Mathura and Kota. It functions as a junction because it links the main north–south corridor with branch services running westwards towards Alwar and other parts of eastern Rajasthan. The station handles a mix of long-distance express trains, superfast services, and passenger trains, and also caters to goods traffic.

Background

The town of Bharatpur was historically the seat of the princely state of Bharatpur, ruled by the Jat dynasty founded by Maharaja Suraj Mal. Rail access to the town was developed during the British era as part of the trunk route between Delhi/Agra and Bombay, then operated by the Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway (BB&CI). After Independence, the line passed under the Western Railway zone, and following the reorganisation of Indian Railways zones in 2003, the section came under the West Central Railway zone with its headquarters at Jabalpur.

As one of the principal stations on the Mathura–Kota section of the Delhi–Mumbai route, Bharatpur Junction plays a notable role in passenger and freight movement between northern and western India. The route through Bharatpur is also part of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor alignment, which has further enhanced the strategic importance of the corridor for goods traffic. The station additionally serves as the most accessible railhead for tourists visiting Keoladeo National Park.
