Background

Bharatiya Jnanpith was established as a trust by members of the Sahu Jain family, with Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain and his wife Rama Jain playing central roles in its formation and direction. The institution was conceived as a body that would promote serious literary, philosophical and Indological research, support the publication of classical and modern texts, and recognise excellence in creative writing across Indian languages.

Its work has covered Indian literature, Jain studies, ancient and medieval texts, philosophy, and critical scholarship. Through its publication wing, the Jnanpith has issued editions of works in Hindi and other Indian languages as well as in English, including original creative writing, translations and academic studies.

The Jnanpith Award

The most widely recognised activity of Bharatiya Jnanpith is the conferment of the Jnanpith Award. The award is given annually to an Indian author for their outstanding contribution to literature. It carries a citation, a cash prize and a bronze replica of Vagdevi (Saraswati), the goddess of learning. Recipients have been chosen from a wide range of Indian languages, making the prize a pan-Indian recognition rather than one limited to a single linguistic tradition.

Other awards and series

In addition to the Jnanpith Award, the trust has instituted other honours, most notably the Moortidevi Award, given for a literary work that reflects Indian philosophy and culture. The Jnanpith also runs publication series in Hindi and other languages, including collected works of major writers and editions of significant texts.

Publishing Activity

As a publisher, Bharatiya Jnanpith has produced:

  • Creative literature in Hindi and several other Indian languages.
  • Editions and studies of Jain canonical and philosophical texts.
  • Indological and research monographs.
  • Reference works, dictionaries and translations.

Significance

Bharatiya Jnanpith occupies a distinctive place in modern Indian cultural life. By framing the Jnanpith Award as a multilingual literary prize, it has helped foreground the idea of a shared Indian literary heritage that spans different languages and regions. Its publishing programme has supported scholarly access to Jain studies and to a broader corpus of Indian literary and philosophical writing.
