Overview
Bharathidasan University (BDU) is a state university located in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India. The university is situated along the Tiruchirappalli–Pudukkottai National Highway 336 and is recognised by the University Grants Commission of India. It is named after the Tamil poet Bharathidasan.
The university has affiliated colleges across several districts of Tamil Nadu, including Ariyalur, Karur, Nagapattinam, Perambalur, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Tiruchirappalli. All major faculties of science and arts are represented in its academic structure.
The university is organised into 4 Faculties, 16 Schools, 37 Departments and 29 Specialised Research Centres. Through its Departments and Schools, BDU offers 151 programmes in total. These include 40 postgraduate programmes (M.A., M.Sc. and M.Tech.), 31 M.Phil. programmes, 33 Ph.D. programmes, 19 Postgraduate Diplomas, 11 Diplomas and 10 Certificate programmes. The postgraduate teaching programmes are conducted under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) in semesters.
In addition to its regular on-campus teaching, the university operates a Distance Education mode, through which it offers 15 undergraduate and 26 postgraduate programmes. The undergraduate and postgraduate programmes under distance education are generally conducted under a non-semester system, while the MCA and MBA programmes are conducted under the semester system. The MCA and MBA distance programmes are noted for their popularity among learners.
