Overview
Bharathidasan University is a state public university located in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India. Established in 1982, it was named after the Tamil poet Subramania Bharathidasan (1891–1964), and serves as a major centre for higher education and research in the central districts of Tamil Nadu.

Background
The university was created by an Act of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly in February 1982, carved out of the jurisdiction of the University of Madras. It was named in honour of the revolutionary Tamil poet Bharathidasan, whose works are widely regarded as a significant contribution to modern Tamil literature.
The main campus is situated at Palkalaiperur in Tiruchirappalli, on the banks of the Kaveri river. The university operates through a combination of departments on its main campus, constituent colleges, and a large network of affiliated colleges spread across several districts of central and southern Tamil Nadu.
Academics
Bharathidasan University offers programmes at the undergraduate, postgraduate, M.Phil. and Ph.D. levels across the sciences, humanities, social sciences, management and education. Teaching and research are organised into schools, with departments covering disciplines such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, life sciences, environmental sciences, computer science, economics, Tamil, English, and management studies.
The university also operates specialised research centres and institutes, and supports distance education through a dedicated directorate.
