Overview
Bharathiar University is a public state university located in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. The university is named after the Tamil poet Subramania Bharati, whose literary and patriotic legacy it seeks to honour. It was established in February 1982 under the provisions of the Bharathiar University Act, 1981 (Act 1 of 1982).
The university received recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 1985. It marked its silver jubilee celebrations on 24 February 2007, on which occasion former President of India A. P. J. Abdul Kalam and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M. Karunanidhi were the chief guests.
Bharathiar University offers a range of academic programmes across various disciplines, including undergraduate (graduate) and postgraduate (master's) degrees, as well as M.Phil. and Ph.D. research programmes. The university is noted for its stringent guidelines governing the evaluation of Ph.D. theses.
