Location and layout

The station is situated in Bhandup, a residential and industrial suburb in the L Ward of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. It is positioned along the main Central Line corridor that runs roughly north–south through the eastern suburbs of Mumbai. The station has platforms serving the up and down slow lines; fast suburban services and long-distance trains use parallel tracks that pass through without stopping.

Bhandup is connected to nearby localities by feeder bus services of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) and by auto-rickshaws operating from both the east and west sides of the station.

Background

The Central Line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway evolved from the original line of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR), which began operations in 1853 between Bori Bunder and Thane. As the suburbs developed northward along this corridor through the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, additional halts and stations were added to serve growing residential populations. Bhandup is one of the suburban halts on this historical alignment, which today forms part of the Central Railway zone of Indian Railways.

Services

The station is served by suburban EMU local trains operating on the slow corridor of the Central Line. Typical services include trains terminating or originating at:

  • Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT)
  • Thane
  • Kalyan Junction
  • Dombivli
  • Ambernath and Karjat (selected services)

Fast locals and mail/express trains do not halt at Bhandup.

Significance

Bhandup is an important commuting point for residents of Bhandup (East and West), parts of Sonapur, Nardas Nagar and adjacent neighbourhoods, who rely on the suburban railway for daily travel to workplaces in central and south Mumbai. The station also provides access to nearby industrial estates and the eastern fringes of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park area.
