Location and access
The station takes its name from its position on the Howrah–Nagpur–Mumbai trunk route, although the town of Bhandara itself is located several kilometres away. Road connectivity links the station with Bhandara town and with the surrounding rural belt of eastern Vidarbha. Nagpur, the regional metropolis, lies to the west and is the nearest major junction.
Background
The line through Bhandara Road was developed as part of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway's eastward extension from Nagpur towards Bengal during the late nineteenth century, eventually linking Bombay (now Mumbai) with Calcutta (now Kolkata) via the central Indian corridor. After Independence, this network was reorganised under Indian Railways and the Bhandara Road section came under the Nagpur division of Central Railway. The line has since been doubled and electrified, supporting heavy passenger and freight movement between western and eastern India.
Services
As an intermediate station on a busy main line, Bhandara Road handles a mix of passenger, express and mail trains running between Nagpur and Gondia, and onwards to destinations in Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal and beyond. Several long-distance trains operating between Mumbai, Nagpur, Howrah, Bilaspur and Raipur halt here, providing the district with direct connectivity to major cities across India.
Significance
The station is the chief rail access point for Bhandara district, an area known for rice cultivation, brass-ware manufacturing and ordnance production. It plays a role in moving agricultural produce, industrial goods and passengers from the district to wider markets, and is the closest mainline station for travellers heading to administrative and commercial activity in Bhandara town.
