Overview
Bhairavi (Sanskrit: भैरवी) is a Hindu goddess venerated within the Shakta tradition. She is described as one of the Mahavidyas, a group of ten goddess forms regarded in tradition as manifestations or aspects of the Mother Goddess.
Within this framework, the Mahavidyas represent different facets of the supreme feminine principle, and Bhairavi is counted among them. She is closely associated with Bhairava, a fierce form of the god Shiva, and is described in tradition as his consort.
As with other goddesses of the Mahavidya group, Bhairavi is approached in Shakta worship through hymns, iconographic depictions, and ritual practice that emphasise the power (shakti) of the Divine Mother. Her pairing with Bhairava reflects the broader pattern in Shaiva and Shakta traditions in which goddesses are envisioned alongside corresponding forms of Shiva.
