Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain! is an Indian Hindi-language sitcom that airs on the &TV channel. The show premiered on 2 March 2015 and has become one of the longest-running sitcoms on Indian television. It is produced by Edit II Productions, the banner of producer Sanjay and Binaifer Kohli. The series revolves around two middle-class neighbouring couples in Kanpur, where each husband is comically infatuated with the other's wife.

Premise

The series is set in the fictional Modern Colony in Kanpur and centres on two neighbouring households. Vibhuti Narayan Mishra, an unemployed and easy-going man, is married to the sophisticated Anita Mishra. Next door lives Manmohan Tiwari, a wealthy paan-shop owner and self-styled "Saraswati of Kanpur", with his simple, traditional wife Angoori Tiwari. The comedy stems from each husband's infatuation with the other's wife, alongside the antics of the colony's other residents.

Production

The show is produced by Sanjay and Binaifer Kohli under their banner Edit II Productions. The Kohlis are also known for producing earlier Hindi comedy shows such as Lapataganj and F.I.R.. Episodes are typically 22–24 minutes in length and shot on indoor sets recreating the houses, streets and shops of the colony.

Cast changes

The role of Angoori Tiwari was originally portrayed by Shilpa Shinde, who left the show in 2016 following a dispute with the production house. Shubhangi Atre took over the role and has continued to play it since.

The role of Anita Mishra was played by Saumya Tandon from the show's premiere until 2020, after which she chose to leave for personal reasons. Nehha Pendse was cast in 2020 but exited in 2021. Vidisha Srivastava subsequently took over the role.

Actor Deepesh Bhan, who played Malkhan, died on 23 July 2022. The character was retained on the show with a tribute, and other actors stepped in for related portions.

Spin-offs

  • Happu Ki Ultan Paltan – A spin-off centred on the character Daroga Happu Singh and his large family. It premiered on &TV on 4 March 2019.

Reception and significance

Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain! has been one of the highest-rated programmes on &TV since its launch and a cornerstone of the channel's prime-time Hindi comedy slate. The show is noted for its slapstick humour, double-entendre dialogue, and use of Hindi idioms in a small-town Uttar Pradesh setting. It has crossed milestones of 1,000, 2,000 and 3,000 episodes, marking it as one of the longest-running daily sitcoms in Indian television history.

Catchphrases delivered by the lead characters, particularly Angoori Bhabi's "Sahi pakde hain" and Vibhuti's flirtatious greetings, have entered popular meme culture in India. The show has also won several awards at the Indian Telly Awards and the Zee Rishtey Awards in comedy categories.

Broadcast

The series airs on weekdays on &TV. Streaming rights are held by ZEE5, where past and current episodes are available on demand. The show is also dubbed and broadcast in select regional markets.
