Geography
The Bhaba valley lies in the western Himalaya, draining the Bhaba river which rises in the high ranges of Kinnaur and joins the Sutlej. The terrain in and around the settlement is mountainous, with steep slopes, coniferous forests at lower elevations and alpine pastures higher up. The valley is also a recognised trekking route connecting Kinnaur with the Spiti valley over the Bhaba Pass.
Background
Bhaba Nagar takes its name from the Bhaba river. Settlements bearing the "Nagar" suffix in this part of Himachal Pradesh are generally project townships or service hamlets that grew around hydroelectric infrastructure on the Sutlej basin, which is one of the most intensively developed river systems for hydropower in India.
Significance
The Bhaba valley is significant for two reasons: as part of the Sutlej basin's hydroelectric generation network, and as a trekking corridor between Kinnaur and Spiti. The locality functions chiefly as a base point for travel further into the upper Bhaba catchment.
