Overview
Bengaluru South is a district of the Indian state of Karnataka. It was carved out of the existing Bengaluru Urban district as part of an administrative reorganisation aimed at improving local governance and reducing the workload on a single district administration covering the rapidly expanding Bengaluru metropolitan area. The district covers areas to the south of the city along with adjoining peri-urban and rural taluks.

Background
The Bengaluru metropolitan region has experienced sustained urbanisation over recent decades, driven primarily by the growth of the information technology sector, manufacturing, education and services. The administrative load on the erstwhile Bengaluru Urban district, which combined dense urban wards with rapidly transitioning peri-urban taluks, prompted the Government of Karnataka to consider splitting the district into smaller units. Bengaluru South was constituted as a separate district under this restructuring.
Administration
Like other districts in Karnataka, Bengaluru South is headed by a Deputy Commissioner who functions as the district magistrate and chief revenue officer. Law and order is supervised under the jurisdictional arrangements of the Karnataka Police, while urban areas in the district fall under municipal bodies including parts of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike and adjoining town panchayats. Rural areas are administered through the Zilla Panchayat system together with taluk and gram panchayats.
Geography
The district lies on the Mysore Plateau, part of the larger Deccan Plateau, at an elevation that supports a relatively moderate climate compared with much of peninsular India. The terrain is generally undulating, with granite outcrops, tanks (man-made lakes) and a mix of urban built-up land and agricultural land cultivating ragi, vegetables, mulberry and horticultural crops.
Economy
The economy of Bengaluru South reflects the broader Bengaluru region, with significant contributions from information technology and IT-enabled services, electronics, biotechnology, education and real estate. Peri-urban areas continue to support agriculture, sericulture, dairying and floriculture, while industrial estates and special economic zones host manufacturing and service enterprises.
Transport
The district is connected by national and state highways radiating from Bengaluru, including routes leading towards Mysuru, Kanakapura and Hosur. It is served by the South Western Railway zone of Indian Railways, and by Kempegowda International Airport located to the north of the city in Bengaluru Rural district. Public transport includes services operated by the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation and the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation, along with sections of the Namma Metro network.
