Bengaluru North district is a proposed administrative district in the Indian state of Karnataka. It has been envisaged through the bifurcation of the existing Bengaluru Urban district, with the aim of improving local administration in the rapidly urbanising northern parts of the Bengaluru metropolitan region.

Background
Bengaluru Urban district, one of the most populous districts in Karnataka, encompasses the city of Bengaluru and its surrounding urbanised taluks. With sustained population growth and the expansion of municipal limits under the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), proposals have periodically been made to split the district into smaller administrative units to ease governance, land records management and revenue functions.
The northern portion of the existing district covers areas around Yelahanka and the corridor leading towards Kempegowda International Airport at Devanahalli, which lies in the adjoining Bengaluru Rural district. This belt has seen significant growth in residential layouts, IT and aerospace activity, and infrastructure projects.
Geography
The area associated with Bengaluru North lies on the Bangalore Plateau, part of the larger Mysore Plateau in southern Karnataka. The terrain is gently undulating, with several historic tanks and minor watercourses draining into the Arkavathi and South Pennar river basins. The climate is tropical savanna, moderated by the elevation of the plateau.
Administration
Within the existing Bengaluru Urban district, the northern taluks include Yelahanka and parts of Bengaluru North taluk. Revenue administration is headed by a Deputy Commissioner based in Bengaluru, while urban civic functions in built-up areas fall under the BBMP.
Significance
The northern fringe of Bengaluru is strategically important for the state economy, hosting institutions and facilities such as the GKVK campus of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru, the Indian Institute of Science extension areas, defence and aerospace establishments, and the airport-linked industrial corridor. Improved district-level administration is seen as relevant to managing land use, planning and public services in this growth zone.
