Background
Jannif was part of the Indo-Fijian community, descendants of indentured labourers and later migrants from the Indian subcontinent who settled in Fiji from the late nineteenth century onwards. This community came to play a substantial role in the country's commercial, sporting and political life, and football in particular developed strong roots among Indo-Fijians in towns such as Suva, Lautoka, Ba and Nadi.
Football career
Jannif was active as a footballer in Fiji, a period during which the sport was being organised at the district and national level. The Fiji Football Association, founded in 1938, became the governing body for the game in the country, drawing its strongest support from Indo-Fijian players, clubs and administrators.
Political career
In the later part of his life, Jannif moved into public affairs, becoming associated with politics in Fiji. His combined profile in sport and politics reflected a pattern common among prominent Indo-Fijian figures of his generation, who often used standing earned in community and sporting life as a basis for civic engagement.
Significance
Jannif's career bridges two important strands of twentieth-century Fijian history: the institutionalisation of football as a major national sport, particularly within the Indo-Fijian community, and the gradual entry of Indo-Fijians into formal political representation in the decades leading up to and following Fiji's independence in 1970.
