Background
Bellandur is a major residential and information technology hub on the south-eastern fringe of Bengaluru, lying close to the Outer Ring Road and the office clusters of Marathahalli, Sarjapur Road and Embassy Tech Village. The area has long faced acute traffic congestion on the Outer Ring Road and surrounding arteries, and inclusion of a metro station at Bellandur has been a recurring demand from local commuters and IT industry bodies.
Blue Line
The Blue Line, officially designated as Reach 2A and 2B of the Phase 2A and Phase 2B expansion of Namma Metro, is being constructed by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited. The corridor runs along the Outer Ring Road from Central Silk Board to K. R. Puram, and then along the elevated alignment over National Highway 44 to Kempegowda International Airport. Bellandur is one of the intermediate stations on the Phase 2A segment between Silk Board and K. R. Puram.
Location and connectivity
The station is being built on an elevated alignment along the Outer Ring Road near the Bellandur junction. Once operational, it is expected to provide direct connectivity to the IT corridor along the ORR, and through interchanges elsewhere on the network, to other parts of the city served by the Purple and Green lines.
Significance
The Blue Line is among the largest metro projects under implementation in India and is intended to relieve traffic on one of Bengaluru's most congested corridors. Bellandur, being situated in a dense IT employment zone, is anticipated to be one of the higher-ridership stations on the line, complementing feeder bus services operated by the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation.
