Background

The station is located on the Green Line of the Kolkata Metro, which links Salt Lake Sector V in the eastern fringes of the city with Howrah Maidan across the Hooghly River. The corridor was conceived to provide a rapid transit link between the IT hub of Salt Lake Sector V, the central business district around Esplanade and Sealdah, and the rail terminus at Howrah, easing congestion on Kolkata's strained surface transport network.

Beleghata station lies on the eastern arm of the corridor, between the Sector V terminus and Sealdah, in a densely populated mixed residential and commercial part of Kolkata. The neighbourhood it serves, Beleghata, is one of the older localities of eastern Kolkata and is connected by major arteries including the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass.

Significance

The station improves public transport access for residents of Beleghata and adjoining areas, providing a direct rail link to the IT corridor at Sector V on one side and to the central and western parts of Kolkata on the other. As an interchange-free intermediate stop on the Green Line, it contributes to the metro's role in reducing road traffic and travel times in eastern Kolkata.
