Background

The station takes its name from the Basin Bridge locality of north Chennai, which historically developed around the canal and dock infrastructure of the city. The junction occupies a strategic position close to Chennai Central, where the lines towards the north (Kolkata route via Gudur and Vijayawada) and the west (Arakkonam, towards Mumbai and Bengaluru) diverge.

Operations

Basin Bridge Junction is primarily significant as a railway operating point rather than a major passenger halt. It functions as a diverging point for trains leaving Chennai Central, and houses associated yards and locomotive facilities. The Basin Bridge area is also home to the Basin Bridge diesel and electric loco shed of Southern Railway, which maintains locomotives used on long-distance services originating from Chennai.

Lines

  • Chennai–Gudur section, towards Vijayawada and the Howrah–Chennai main line.
  • Chennai–Arakkonam section, connecting to the Chennai–Bengaluru and Chennai–Mumbai routes.
  • Suburban link towards Chennai Beach via the north Chennai line.

Significance

As one of the throat junctions for Chennai Central, Basin Bridge Junction plays a key role in regulating the movement of mail, express, suburban and freight trains in and out of the Chennai terminal area. Its yard and signalling arrangements influence the operational capacity of one of the busiest passenger terminals in southern India.
