Lines and connectivity
Barwadih is a junction on the Grand Chord, the high-density trunk route between Sitarampur and Mughal Sarai (now Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction) that was opened by the East Indian Railway Company in 1906 to provide a shorter alignment between Howrah and Delhi. From Barwadih, a branch line runs westward and northward through Chopan to Singrauli, providing connectivity to the coalfields and power-generation belt of the Singrauli region. This branch is significant for goods traffic, particularly coal movement.
Routes
- Gaya – Dhanbad / Mughal Sarai (Grand Chord main line)
- Barwadih – Garhwa Road – Chopan – Singrauli (branch line)
Administration
The station falls under the Dhanbad division of East Central Railway, which was constituted as a separate zone of Indian Railways in 2002 with its headquarters at Hajipur.
Significance
Barwadih's importance arises from three roles: as a stop on the Grand Chord linking eastern and northern India, as a junction giving rail access to the Singrauli industrial and mining belt via Chopan, and as a gateway station for tourist traffic to the Betla National Park and Palamau Tiger Reserve. The station also serves the surrounding rural and tribal areas of Latehar district.
