McCarthy began his senior cricket career in 2015, making his first-class debut that year. He played for Durham in English domestic cricket before continuing his career primarily with Ireland. As a right-arm medium pacer, he has been part of Ireland's bowling attack across formats.

Central contract

In January 2020, McCarthy was one of nineteen players awarded a central contract by Cricket Ireland. This marked the first year in which all such contracts were awarded on a full-time basis, a notable step in the professionalisation of Irish cricket.

Significance

McCarthy's selection among the first cohort of fully professional centrally contracted Ireland players reflects the country's transition into Test-playing status and the formalisation of its men's cricketing structure.
