Overview
Barpeta Road railway station functions as a key intermediate halt on the broad-gauge route running through lower and central Assam, connecting Guwahati and Rangiya in the west with the upper Assam towns to the east. It primarily handles passenger traffic, including express, mail and passenger services that ply between Guwahati, Bongaigaon, New Bongaigaon, Rangiya, and stations further east towards Tinsukia and Dibrugarh.
Location and access
The station is situated in Barpeta Road, a sub-divisional town in Barpeta district. It lies roughly 20 kilometres north of Barpeta town, which is well known for the Barpeta Satra founded in the Vaishnavite tradition associated with Madhavdev. The station is also a common transit point for travellers heading to the Manas National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located to the north of the town.
Background
The railway line through Barpeta Road forms part of the historic metre-gauge network laid out in Assam during the colonial period to link the Brahmaputra valley with the rest of British India. Following the gauge conversion programme undertaken by Indian Railways in subsequent decades, the section was upgraded to broad gauge, allowing through running of mainline trains from other parts of the country.
Services
The station handles a mix of long-distance and regional services operated by the Northeast Frontier Railway. Trains halting at Barpeta Road typically connect it with:
- Guwahati and Kamakhya
- New Bongaigaon and Rangiya junctions
- Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and other upper Assam destinations
- Inter-state services to cities outside the North East via the Bongaigaon route
Significance
As the nearest major railhead to Barpeta town and to the Manas National Park, the station holds religious, cultural and tourist significance. It also serves agricultural and commercial movement from the surrounding rural belt of lower Assam.
