Overview

The station functions as a wayside halt on the busy double-line corridor connecting Itarsi Junction with Bhopal Junction, which forms part of the broader Howrah–Mumbai and Delhi–Chennai trunk routes that pass through central India. Barkhera is situated on the climb across the Vindhya escarpment, an area that has historically required banker locomotives to assist heavy freight trains negotiating the gradient between Itarsi and the Budni–Barkhera section.

Geography and setting

Barkhera town lies in the Narmada valley region of Madhya Pradesh, north of Itarsi and south of Bhopal. The surrounding terrain is characterised by forested hills of the Satpura and Vindhya ranges, and the railway alignment in this stretch is noted for its tunnels, curves and a steep ruling gradient.

Services

The station handles passenger and a limited number of express trains, while a much larger volume of through traffic, including long-distance mail/express services and freight, passes without stopping. It serves as a local railhead for nearby villages in the surrounding tehsil.
