Location and setting

Barhiya is a town situated in the Gangetic plains of southern Bihar, between Mokama and Lakhisarai. The station lies on the southern bank of the Ganges and serves as a railhead for the surrounding rural belt, which is largely agrarian. The neighbouring stations on the main line are Hathidah Junction towards the west and Lakhisarai Junction towards the east.

Background

The line on which Barhiya is situated forms part of the historic Howrah–Delhi main line, which was developed by the East Indian Railway Company in the nineteenth century to connect Calcutta (Kolkata) with the Gangetic heartland and northern India. After the formation of Indian Railways and subsequent reorganisations, the section came under the East Central Railway zone, headquartered at Hajipur, with day-to-day administration through the Danapur division.

Services

Barhiya is primarily a halt for passenger and a limited number of express trains travelling between Patna, Kiul, Jhajha and onward destinations. Long-distance through trains on the Howrah–Delhi route generally do not stop at the station. The station handles inbound and outbound passengers from Barhiya town and adjoining villages, and also caters to limited goods traffic linked to local agriculture.

Significance

As a wayside station on a major trunk route, Barhiya provides essential rail connectivity for residents who would otherwise rely on Mokama or Lakhisarai for travel. Its position on an electrified, double-track section integrates the town into the broader Patna–Kiul–Jhajha rail corridor.
