Background
Barharwa lies on the historic Sahibganj Loop, one of the oldest railway alignments in India. The loop was constructed by the East Indian Railway Company in the mid-19th century to link Howrah with the upper Gangetic plain by following the southern bank of the Ganges. It formed part of the original main line before the shorter Sahibganj–Kiul chord routings reshaped traffic patterns later.
At Barharwa, a branch line diverges towards Azimganj in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal, providing a connection across the Ganges plain in lower Bengal. This junction role gives the station its operational significance.
Lines and connections
- Sahibganj Loop: connecting Howrah and Kiul via Bandel, Barddhaman, Rampurhat, Pakur, Sahibganj and Bhagalpur.
- Barharwa–Azimganj branch: a connecting route towards the Murshidabad region of West Bengal.
Administration
The station is administered by the Eastern Railway zone of Indian Railways, and falls within the Howrah railway division for operational purposes. It handles a mix of passenger, express and goods traffic typical of stations on the Sahibganj Loop.
Significance
As a junction, Barharwa serves both as an interchange between the main loop line and the Azimganj branch, and as a regional railhead for parts of the Santhal Pargana. The station contributes to the movement of agricultural produce and passenger traffic between Jharkhand and West Bengal.
