The station is situated on the route linking Sambalpur Junction with Titlagarh Junction, a section that forms part of the broader rail network connecting Odisha with Chhattisgarh and the Howrah–Mumbai trunk corridor via Raipur and Vizianagaram. The town of Bargarh lies on National Highway 53, and the station is integrated with local road transport for onward connections to surrounding tehsils.

Bargarh Road falls under the Sambalpur railway division of the East Coast Railway zone, which has its headquarters at Bhubaneswar. The East Coast Railway zone was created in 2003, after which administration of this section was transferred from the South Eastern Railway.
