Overview
Bareilly Junction lies on the Moradabad–Lucknow section of the Northern Railway and forms part of the broad-gauge route linking Delhi with Lucknow via Moradabad. The station also serves as the originating point for several lines that historically operated on metre gauge, including the route towards Kasganj, parts of which have been progressively converted to broad gauge under Indian Railways' uni-gauge policy. The city is also served by a separate station, Bareilly City, which lies on the Izzatnagar division route.
Background and history
Rail connectivity in Bareilly developed in the late nineteenth century when the Oudh and Rohilkhand Railway extended its lines through the city, linking it with Lucknow and the towns of the Rohilkhand region. With the consolidation of Indian railway administration after independence, the station came under the Northern Railway zone created in 1952, and was placed in the Moradabad railway division. The presence of two systems—broad gauge under Northern Railway at Bareilly Junction, and metre and narrow gauge lines under the North Eastern Railway operating out of Izzatnagar—gave the city a notable position in Indian railway geography.
Layout and facilities
The station has multiple platforms catering to long-distance and passenger services. Standard amenities at the station include reservation counters, waiting rooms, retiring rooms, food stalls, and a foot-overbridge connecting the platforms. The station is situated centrally within the city and is connected by road to major destinations in Bareilly, including the Bareilly City station and the cantonment area.
Services
Bareilly Junction is a stoppage for several mail, express, superfast, and passenger trains. Notable services that pass through or halt at the station include trains running between Delhi and points in eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and beyond, as well as services operating between Lucknow and the western parts of the country. The station also handles a number of originating and terminating passenger services for the surrounding region.
Significance
As the largest railway station of Bareilly, the junction is central to commuter and long-distance rail travel in the Rohilkhand region. It supports passenger movement linked to the city's role as an administrative, educational, and commercial centre, including its furniture and zari-zardozi industries, military cantonment, and seat of the Bareilly division of Uttar Pradesh.
