Overview

Barauni Junction lies in the industrial town of Barauni, which is known for its oil refinery, thermal power station and fertiliser plant. Owing to this industrial concentration and its location near the river Ganga, the station handles a substantial volume of freight traffic in addition to passenger services. It functions as an interchange between several routes radiating across Bihar and onward to neighbouring states.

Lines and connectivity

The junction connects multiple routes, including lines towards Patna, Mokama and Hajipur in the west, Katihar and the northeast in the east via Khagaria, Samastipur and the Mithila region in the north, and onwards via the Mokama bridge across the Ganga to the south. This positions Barauni as a key node linking north Bihar with the rest of the Indian Railways network.

Services

The station serves as the originating or terminating point for several long-distance express trains and is a halt for numerous mail, express and superfast services running between Bihar and other parts of India, including connections to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Guwahati, Lucknow and Amritsar. Passenger and MEMU services link Barauni with smaller towns across Bihar.

Freight and industrial significance

Barauni is a significant freight handling point on account of the adjoining Indian Oil Corporation's Barauni Refinery, the Barauni Thermal Power Station operated under NTPC, and the Hindustan Urvarak and Rasayan Limited (HURL) fertiliser unit at Barauni. Movement of petroleum products, coal, fertiliser raw materials and finished goods forms a major component of the station's operations.

Infrastructure

The station has multiple platforms equipped for long-rake express services, along with goods sidings linked to the surrounding industrial units. As part of route modernisation in Bihar, the lines through Barauni have been progressively electrified, allowing electric traction on most through services.

Administration

Barauni Junction falls under the Sonpur railway division of the East Central Railway zone, which is headquartered at Hajipur. The Sonpur division is responsible for operations, maintenance and commercial activities at the station.
