Background

Baran town is situated in eastern Rajasthan, close to the border with Madhya Pradesh, and forms part of the Hadoti plateau along with Kota, Bundi and Jhalawar. The railway station provides connectivity between Kota, a major rail junction on the Delhi–Mumbai trunk route, and Bina Junction in Madhya Pradesh, which lies on the Howrah–Mumbai trunk corridor. This positions Baran on a useful east–west cross-link between two of the busiest rail axes in central India.

Operations

The station is administered under the Kota division of the West Central Railway, which was carved out and headquartered at Jabalpur when the zone was created by Indian Railways in 2003. Trains halting at Baran connect the town to destinations including Kota, Bina, Gwalior, Bhopal and several other towns along the route. The station also handles freight relevant to the agrarian and small-industrial economy of the district.

Significance

As the primary railhead of Baran district, the station plays an important role in passenger movement for residents of Baran town and adjoining tehsils such as Atru, Chhabra, Chhipabarod, Anta, Mangrol, Kishanganj and Shahabad. It also supports pilgrimage and tourist travel to nearby sites in the Hadoti region.
