Administration
Baran is the headquarters of Baran district, which was carved out of the erstwhile Kota district on 10 April 1991, when Kota was reorganised into the separate districts of Kota, Baran and Bundi. The city is administered by a municipal council (nagar parishad) and houses the offices of the District Collector, the Superintendent of Police, the district court and other district-level departments.

Baran district comprises several tehsils, with the city itself being part of Baran tehsil. Other tehsils in the district include Atru, Mangrol, Chhabra, Chhipabarod, Kishanganj, Shahabad and Anta.
History
Historically, the area around Baran formed part of the Hadoti region, long associated with the Hada branch of the Chauhan Rajputs who ruled Bundi and Kota. Before the formation of independent India, the territory was part of the princely state of Kota under the Rajputana Agency. After the integration of princely states, it became part of the United State of Rajasthan and subsequently of the State of Rajasthan from 1956. Baran remained part of Kota district until the bifurcation of 1991, after which it emerged as a district headquarters in its own right.
Economy
The economy of Baran is predominantly agricultural. The surrounding region is a major producer of soyabean, wheat, mustard, gram, coriander and garlic, and the city serves as a krishi upaj mandi (regulated agricultural market) for these commodities. Small-scale agro-processing units, oil mills and trading establishments form the backbone of local industry. Government services, education and retail also contribute significantly to urban employment.
Transport
Baran is served by the Baran railway station on the Kota–Bina section of the West Central Railway, providing connectivity towards Kota, Bina, Jhansi and beyond. National Highway 27 (the east–west corridor) and state highways link the city by road to Kota, Jhalawar and the towns of western Madhya Pradesh. The nearest major airport is at Kota, with onward connectivity through Jaipur.
