Overview

Bantwala railway station is situated on the railway route connecting the port city of Mangaluru with the interior districts of Karnataka through Hassan. The station provides rail access to the town of Bantwala, which lies on the Netravati river and is a taluk headquarters in Dakshina Kannada district. It is positioned in a region that links the coastal Konkan belt with the Western Ghats and the Deccan plateau.

Background

The line passing through Bantwala forms part of the broader effort to connect coastal Karnataka with Bengaluru by a more direct route through the Western Ghats. The corridor traverses challenging ghat terrain between Sakleshpur and Subrahmanya Road, and continues through the lateritic plains of Dakshina Kannada to reach Mangaluru. Bantwala is one of the intermediate stations on this stretch.

Services

As a smaller intermediate station, Bantwala primarily handles passenger and a limited number of express services that halt en route between Mangaluru and Bengaluru/Hassan. The station serves daily commuters as well as longer-distance travellers from the surrounding rural and semi-urban areas of Bantwal taluk.

Significance

The station is locally important as it offers railway access to Bantwala town and several surrounding villages that would otherwise depend mainly on road transport along National Highway 73 and connecting state highways. It contributes to regional connectivity for trade in agricultural produce, areca nut, and cashew that the Dakshina Kannada region is known for.
