Location and layout

The station is situated in Bandra West, near the junction with Bandra East, and is connected to both sides of the suburb by foot overbridges and a road overbridge. It lies between Mahim Junction to the south and Khar Road to the north on the Western line. The station has multiple platforms serving slow and fast suburban services, with separate platforms for outstation trains handled at the nearby Bandra Terminus.

History

Bandra was among the earliest stations established on the Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway (BB&CI), the predecessor of present-day Western Railway, when the suburban line northward from Churchgate and Bombay Backbay was developed in the nineteenth century. The original station building, in a colonial-era stone architectural style, has been recognised for its heritage value and has been retained alongside the modern operational facilities of the station.

Services

Bandra is served by Western line suburban EMU services running between Churchgate, Mumbai Central, Bandra, Andheri, Borivali, Virar and Dahanu Road. The station is one of the busier suburban stops on the line owing to the commercial and residential density of Bandra. Long-distance services to and from western and northern India are handled at the separate Bandra Terminus, located to the east of the suburban station.

Connectivity

  • Bus services operated by BEST connect the station to Bandra West, Bandra East, Kurla, Andheri and other parts of Mumbai.
  • The Bandra–Worli Sea Link is accessible from Bandra, providing a road link to south Mumbai.
  • Auto-rickshaw and taxi stands are located on both the east and west sides of the station.

Significance

The station is closely associated with the development of Bandra as a major suburb of Mumbai. Its heritage building is among the visible markers of the BB&CI Railway era in the city, and the station continues to serve as an important node for daily commuters in the western suburbs.
