Bandel is a town in the Hooghly district of the Indian state of West Bengal. Situated on the western bank of the Hooghly River, it forms part of the greater Hooghly–Chinsurah urban agglomeration in the Kolkata metropolitan region. Bandel is best known for the Bandel Church, one of the oldest Christian churches in eastern India, and for Bandel Junction, a major railway junction on the Eastern Railway network.

Etymology
The name Bandel is generally traced to the Bengali and Persian word bandar, meaning a port or harbour, reflecting the town's origin as a Portuguese trading settlement on the Hooghly during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.
Geography
Bandel lies on the western bank of the Hooghly, immediately north of Chinsurah and Hooghly town, and is contiguous with the urban built-up area of Bansberia. The terrain is the flat alluvial plain of the lower Ganga delta, and the climate is tropical with a pronounced monsoon season between June and September.
History
Bandel was established as a Portuguese settlement in the late sixteenth century, growing as a riverine port that traded with Hooghly and the surrounding region. In 1599 the Portuguese constructed the Church of the Holy Rosary, popularly known as the Bandel Church, which is among the earliest Christian churches in Bengal. The settlement was sacked by the Mughal forces of Emperor Shah Jahan in 1632 during the campaign against Portuguese activities on the Hooghly; the church was later rebuilt in 1660 under permission granted by the Mughals.
With the decline of Portuguese commercial influence and the rise of the Dutch at Chinsurah and the British at Calcutta, Bandel's role as a trading port diminished. It was subsequently absorbed into British administration along with the rest of the Hooghly region. After Indian independence in 1947, Bandel became part of West Bengal and developed as a residential and railway town within the expanding Kolkata urban region.
Bandel Church
The Basilica of the Holy Rosary, locally called the Bandel Church, is the principal landmark of the town. It is administered by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Calcutta and was raised to the status of a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1988. The shrine of Our Lady of the Happy Voyage, traditionally associated with the protection of mariners on the Hooghly, draws pilgrims from across eastern India, particularly during Christmas and the church's annual feast.

Railways
Bandel Junction is one of the busiest railway junctions in West Bengal and falls under the Howrah division of the Eastern Railway zone. It serves as a junction where the Howrah–Bardhaman main line meets the Howrah–Bardhaman chord and lines towards Katwa and Naihati via the Jubilee Bridge across the Hooghly. The station handles a high volume of suburban (EMU) services connecting it with Howrah, Sealdah, Bardhaman, Katwa and Naihati, in addition to long-distance trains.
Roads
Bandel is connected by road to Kolkata, Chinsurah, Bansberia and Kalyani, with State Highway links and ferry services across the Hooghly to the eastern bank in the Naihati–Kalyani belt.
Civic administration
Bandel falls within the Hooghly-Chinsurah and Bansberia municipal areas of Hooghly district. Administratively it is part of the Chinsurah subdivision and is included in the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority's planning region.
Significance
Bandel is significant for three intersecting reasons: as a heritage site marking early European contact with Bengal through the Portuguese settlement and the basilica; as a major node in the suburban railway network of southern West Bengal; and as part of the historically dense Hooghly riverbank corridor that also includes Chandannagar (former French settlement), Chinsurah (former Dutch settlement) and Serampore (former Danish settlement).
