Overview
Balurghat railway station serves the headquarters town of Dakshin Dinajpur district, which lies in the northern part of West Bengal close to the international border with Bangladesh. The station is the terminus of a branch line that connects Balurghat with Eklakhi Junction on the Barharwa–Azimganj–Katwa loop section, providing rail access between the district and the broader Indian Railways network.
Background and history
Rail connectivity to Balurghat has historically been limited because of the geography of the region, which was reshaped by the Partition of Bengal in 1947. The earlier metre-gauge link that once connected this part of undivided Bengal was disrupted by the new international boundary. The present Eklakhi–Balurghat broad-gauge line was developed in subsequent decades to restore direct rail access to the district headquarters, with the line passing through stations such as Buniadpur and Gangarampur before terminating at Balurghat.
Services
The station handles a mix of passenger and express services that link Balurghat with Malda Town, Kolkata and other destinations. Notable long-distance trains originating from or terminating at Balurghat include services connecting it to Howrah and Sealdah in the Kolkata metropolitan area, providing the district's principal long-distance rail option. Local passenger services run on the Eklakhi–Balurghat section.
Significance
As the only railway terminus in Dakshin Dinajpur district, Balurghat station is an important hub for passenger movement, agricultural produce and goods transport in this border region. It plays a key role in linking a relatively remote part of West Bengal with the state capital and with northern districts such as Malda and Uttar Dinajpur.
