The station is situated on the Gonda–Gorakhpur loop line, which connects two important junctions in the North Eastern Railway zone. It serves as the principal railhead for Balrampur town, an administrative headquarters in northern Uttar Pradesh located close to the India–Nepal border.

Balrampur lies between Gonda Junction to the south-west and Gorakhpur Junction to the east, both of which are major railway hubs. The town is also a gateway for pilgrims travelling to Sravasti, an ancient Buddhist site associated with Gautama Buddha, located in the neighbouring Sravasti district.
