Background
Baloo Gupte came from a cricketing family in Maharashtra. His elder brother, Subhash Gupte, was one of the finest leg-spinners of his era and a regular in the Indian Test side through the 1950s. Baloo followed his brother into the same craft of wrist-spin bowling, eventually establishing himself in domestic cricket on the strong Bombay side that dominated the Ranji Trophy in the period.
Career
Gupte played first-class cricket primarily for Bombay, the leading domestic team of the era, and later turned out for Bengal. As a leg-spinner, he was part of a long Indian tradition of wrist-spin bowling that included contemporaries such as Bhagwath Chandrasekhar.
He was selected to play Test cricket for India in the 1960s. His Test appearances were limited, in part because of the depth of spin bowling talent available to India during that period, but he remained a respected figure on the domestic circuit.
Significance
Baloo Gupte is remembered as a member of one of Indian cricket's notable sibling pairings. While his elder brother Subhash had a longer and more decorated international career, Baloo's own progression into Test cricket reinforced the family's contribution to Indian leg-spin bowling and to Bombay's domestic cricket tradition.
