The station lies in the Ballygunge area, one of the older planned residential and commercial neighbourhoods of south Kolkata. It is connected to nearby localities such as Gariahat, Park Circus, Kasba and Dhakuria by road, and is within reach of the Park Circus and Ballygunge tram and bus corridors. The station's proximity to educational institutions, hospitals and shopping districts of south Kolkata contributes to consistently heavy daily passenger footfall.

Ballygunge Junction functions as a branching point on the Sealdah South line. From here, the suburban network diverges in two principal directions:
- Towards Budge Budge, via Tollygunge, Majerhat and Santoshpur, serving the south-western suburbs along the Hooghly.
- Towards Sealdah South Section main line, continuing to Sonarpur, where the line further splits towards Canning, Diamond Harbour, Lakshmikantapur and Namkhana.
