Overview
Balharshah lies on the Howrah–Nagpur–Mumbai line and the New Delhi–Chennai trunk route, two of the principal long-distance corridors of Indian Railways. The station functions as a junction where the line from Nagpur in the north meets the line continuing south towards Kazipet in Telangana, with branches connecting onward to Chandrapur, Wardha and the coalfields of the Wardha valley.
Location and significance
The station is situated near the Wardha river and serves the twin urban centres of Ballarpur and Chandrapur. Owing to the heavy concentration of coal mining, thermal power generation, paper manufacturing and cement industries in the surrounding region, Balharshah handles a substantial volume of freight traffic in addition to passenger services. Coal rakes from the Western Coalfields network and dispatches from the Ballarpur Industries paper mill contribute significantly to the station's freight throughput.
Operations
Balharshah is a crew-changing point for many long-distance trains running between northern, southern and eastern India. As an electric and diesel traction interchange, it has historically been used for locomotive changes on through trains. The station has multiple platforms, full-length passenger amenities, and adjoining yard facilities for goods trains.
Connectivity
- Northwards towards Nagpur and onward to New Delhi.
- Southwards towards Sirpur Kaghaznagar, Ramagundam and Kazipet, continuing to Hyderabad and Chennai.
- Eastwards via Gondia towards Howrah on the Howrah–Mumbai route.
Trains
A large number of premium and mail/express services halt at Balharshah, including Rajdhani, Duronto, Sampark Kranti, Garib Rath and superfast trains running between Delhi/Punjab and the south Indian cities of Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Tirupati and Thiruvananthapuram. Passenger and MEMU services link Balharshah with Chandrapur, Sevagram and other regional points.
