Overview
Vijay alias Balasaheb Bhausaheb Thorat, popularly known as Balasaheb Thorat, born on 7 February 1953, is an Indian politician affiliated with the Indian National Congress. He has served as the Revenue Minister in the Government of Maharashtra and was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from the Sangamner constituency. He also held the position of Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.
A senior leader within the Congress Party, Thorat has served in various capacities in the Government of Maharashtra, including Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Revenue and Khar Lands. His political work has been closely associated with the Sangamner and Akole talukas of Ahmednagar district.
Thorat is regarded as a key figure in Maharashtra's cooperative movement. He is the founder of a milk cooperative in his region and has previously served as President of the Sangamner District and State Cooperative Bank. He has also been involved in the establishment of cooperative educational institutions in Sangamner. As of July 2024, he is the President of Amrutvahini College of Engineering.
