Overview

The station lies on the Bandel–Katwa line, a branch line of the Eastern Railway zone that connects Bandel Junction with Katwa Junction. The line runs broadly parallel to the Hooghly River through the towns and villages of Hooghly and Bardhaman districts, and Balagarh is one of the intermediate halts along this corridor.

Background

The Bandel–Katwa section was historically operated as a narrow-gauge line for many decades before being converted to broad gauge and electrified as part of the modernisation of suburban and branch line services in southern West Bengal. After conversion, the line was integrated into the Howrah suburban network of the Eastern Railway, allowing direct electric multiple unit (EMU) services between Katwa, Bandel and Howrah.

Services

Balagarh is primarily served by local passenger trains operating on the Bandel–Katwa route. These services connect the station to Bandel Junction, from where onward connections are available to Howrah Junction, Barddhaman Junction and other major destinations in West Bengal.

Significance

The station provides basic rail access for residents of Balagarh and adjoining villages, supporting daily commuting, market trade, and travel to administrative and educational centres in Hooghly district. Balagarh is also known historically for its boat-building tradition along the Hooghly River, and the railway station functions as one of the local transport links to the area.
